What is happening?

The fuzzy and adorable animal whom you see on the front of your Icee cup is dying. The population of Polar bears has dropped forty percent due to the recent decrease in sea ice over the last couple of years. This is all because of climate change, which we contribute widely too. Polar bears aren’t the only animal who suffer from the rapid increase in climate change.

We will pay the price too, because of us burning fossil fuels we produce carbon dioxide which causes the temperature of the atmosphere to increase. Humans are releasing more of this gas than ever before. In 2010 the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere was measured, and found to be at the highest in the last 650,000 years.

On top of this, deforestation destroys earths only natural way of removing the carbon dioxide from our atmosphere, slowly but surely we are killing ourselves. At the rate we are going rain forest are estimated to vanish completely in the course of a hundred years. This destroys the habitats of many species as well as affecting our water cycle’s ability to return water vapor into the atmosphere. We are considered the top dog of species living on earth, so it is our responsibility to protect and take care of our planet for us and for everything else inhabiting this once green planet.

What can we do?

Of course we can’t necessarily just stop global warming all together, we’re only human. But there are little steps that you can take to help from home.

  1. Turn off Lights, Appliances and Other Items Operated by Electricity When They Aren’t in Use.
  2. Check the Thermostat on Your Water Heater – Keep it at 120° Fahrenheit or below.
  3. Keep Your Tires Inflated – Under inflated tires wastes gasoline and wears your tires out faster.
  4. Buy Local Produce to reduces transportation requirements.
  5. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
  6.  Buy Energy-Efficient Products.
  7. Plant a Tree.
